Healthy ageing is about more than physical health. It also involves keeping our minds active, staying socially connected, and continuing to enjoy the activities that bring meaning and joy to everyday life. One simple place where all of this can come together is at Brimbank Libraries.

Libraries are welcoming community spaces that support wellbeing at every stage of life. They offer opportunities to learn new things, meet people, and take part in activities that keep both the mind and body engaged.

Libraries support healthy ageing in many ways, helping people keep their minds active, stay socially connected, and take part in meaningful activities. For example:

  • Keeping the brain active is an important part of healthy ageing. Reading, puzzles, learning new skills, and creative activities can help stimulate memory and support cognitive health. Libraries provide easy access to books, resources, and programs that encourage lifelong learning and curiosity.

  • Social connection is just as important. Loneliness and social isolation can have a real impact on wellbeing, particularly as life circumstances change. Libraries play an important role in helping reduce loneliness by offering a safe, friendly space where everyone is welcome. Whether you visit to borrow a book, read a magazine, tackle a communal jigsaw puzzle, enjoy a quiet moment, or join an activity, the library is a place where people can feel connected to their community.

  • Libraries also provide regular programs that help people stay connected. These programs give visitors the chance to catch up with familiar faces or meet new people. For example, we have a monthly Garden Club at Keilor Library, where people can share gardening tips, step into our outdoor garden, and participate in growing and harvesting produce from our planter boxes. Visitors can also take home seeds from our seed libraries at the Keilor and Sydenham branches. Gardening is known to reduce stress and support both mental and physical wellbeing.

  • Creative programs are another popular way to connect. Create and Chat sessions, for example, are relaxed gatherings where people can bring along a craft project or simply enjoy conversation with others. It’s a welcoming space where creativity and friendship can grow side by side.

The beauty of library programs is that there’s something for everyone. Whether you enjoy reading, gardening, crafting, learning new skills, or simply meeting new people, the library offers opportunities to stay active, curious, and connected.

Most importantly, libraries are places where everyone belongs. No special skills are needed – just come along and take part. Brimbank Libraries staff are always ready to welcome you, so if you don’t know where to start, please ask us.
