What is a Heatwave?
A heatwave is a period of very hot weather that lasts for several days or longer. During a heatwave, both daytime and night-time temperatures remain high, giving the body little chance to cool down.
Heatwaves are more than just uncomfortable. They can place serious stress on the body and increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for older people, young children, and people with existing health conditions.
Because heatwaves can affect the health of individuals and the wider community, it is important for community members to stay informed, take precautions, and look out for one another during extreme heat.
Staying Safe in a Heatwave
Here are some effective ways to stay cool, hydrated and safe during hot weather and heatwaves:
- Drink plenty of water – Carry a refillable water bottle and avoid alcohol or excess caffeine which can dehydrate you.
- Eat water-rich foods – Choose fruits, vegetables, smoothies and yoghurt to boost fluid intake.
- Keep cool – Stay indoors during peak heat, close curtains, and use fans or air-conditioning.
- Take it easy – Cancel non-essential outings and plan activities for the coolest parts of the day.
- Dress for the weather – Wear light, loose clothing and a hat.
- Check the forecast – Monitor weather conditions so you can plan ahead.
- Look out for others – Check in on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours during extreme heat.
Health Issues That Can Arise During a Heatwave
Heatwaves can put serious stress on the body, and heat-related illness can develop quickly.
Watch for warning signs including heavy sweating, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
Dehydration increases the risk of heat-related illness. Signs can include strong thirst, dark urine, headache, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, and a rapid heart rate. Staying well hydrated during hot weather is essential to protect your health.
