Words Grow Minds is an early years initiative developed by Raising Literacy Australia and supported by Public Libraries Victoria to help families support their children’s early learning and development through four simple everyday activities: talk, play, read and sing.
Parents and caregivers play an important role in their child’s development. Everyday moments, such as sharing a book, singing a favourite song, chatting during a walk or playing together, help build language, strengthen connections and support growing minds.
Four ways to support your child’s development
These simple activities support language development, learning and connection in the early years.
- Talk: Chat with your child throughout the day, describe what you’re doing and introduce new words during everyday activities.
- Play: Explore toys, games and imaginative activities together to encourage curiosity, creativity and learning.
- Read: Share picture books, tell stories and enjoy looking at books together. Explore our children’s books and reading resources on our digital library to find stories to enjoy as a family.
- Sing: Sing favourite songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies to build vocabulary, listening skills and connection.
