My Smart Garden

My Smart Garden is a free educational gardening program that will help you grow a beautiful and productive garden in your space, whether that’s a few pots on a rental balcony or a larger suburban backyard. The program offers videos, articles, and workshops – including sessions held at Brimbank Libraries – on a variety of topics such as beginner gardening, seed saving, pest management, and so much more.

My Smart Garden is an award-winning program, proudly delivered by several local councils in Naarm/Melbourne, including Brimbank City Council.

EPA Vic GardenSafe – Testing your soil

Did you know waste and chemicals can linger in our environment, entering through sewage, waste, accidents, or industry? Historical sources like lead paint and gasoline have also affected urban soil quality.

These contaminants can impact your soil’s health and vegetable growth. Environment Protection Authority Victoria offers GardenSafe, a free soil testing program to help you understand and manage your backyard soil quality before you start growing in your garden.

Compost Revolution

Composting is something we all can do to minimise waste going to landfill and help make a big difference for the environment.

The Compost Revolution is making it easy for Australians to turn food scraps into rich soil and liquid fertiliser at home and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfills.

Brimbank City Council residents can get up to 80% off RRP on a compost bin, worm farm or Green Cone from The Compost Revolution.

Seed Library FAQs

Seed Libraries help to promote sustainability by supporting and encouraging locals to grow, harvest, save and donate their own seeds.

Gardening itself has a positive impact on diet and provides healthier, budget friendly options for communities.

The Brimbank Seed Library aims to help the community by providing opportunities for learning, sustainability and health.

Here’s how the Seed Library works:

Borrow seeds from the Brimbank Seed Library currently available at Sydenham Library and Keilor Library.
Grow seeds at home.
Harvest seeds from your plants
Donate harvested seeds back to the Brimbank Seed Library.

The Brimbank Seed Library can be accessed from the Sydenham Library and Keilor Library using your library membership card.

For more details about joining, read more about how to become a library member.

There is no charge to borrow seeds from the Brimbank Seed Library and no charge to become a member.

For more details about joining, read more about how to become a library member.

Each Brimbank library member will be able to borrow one packet of seeds per month.

For each donation to the Brimbank Seed Library, members will be able to borrow an additional packet of seeds.

Yellow envelopes will be provided.  Harvest seeds and complete the label as indicated.

If you need help, just ask one of our friendly staff.

Only heirloom seeds can be accepted by the Brimbank Seed Library.

Heirloom seeds are those that have been saved, passed down, and must be open-pollinated. Open-pollination is the natural way of a plant becoming pollinated by the wind, rain, bees and birds. Heirloom seeds are more likely to get diseases and have larger, oddly shaped fruit.

Brimbank Libraries have an extensive collection of gardening, cooking and sustainable resources including books, ebooks and audio books.

Use the Brimbank Libraries catalogue to search our collection.
